Traffjc Law

I am often amazed by how many defendants I see in court waiting in long lines only to go before the judge and plead guilty. I want to shout, “Don’t plead guilty! I can help!!!” Most times, a driver can plead guilty to a lesser charge. This charge usually carries no points and does not appear on the driver’s record. However, the defendant will pay a higher fine to the state or municipality.

Even if the driver pays a higher fine, I believe they come out ahead by having their traffic violation amended. In Missouri, a conviction remains on your driving record for at least three years. It is removed over the course of three years if there are no additional violations. During those three years, a driver’s insurance rates may be raised. A single ticket can raise insurance rates by $300 dollars in one year. Multiple tickets can increase insurance rates by thousands of dollars!

Your driver’s license can be suspended for at least three months if you receive as few as 8 points in eighteen months. It will be suspended for a year if you receive 12 points in twelve months.
